a pronoun can only be used if the subject is presented in the sentence first. pronouns=it, they, us, we, him, her, etc.

you can't fix these sentences btw

1. Fixed version: If the phone rings again this evening, ask *the caller* please not to call anymore.

2. The German shepherds chased the deer until they were quite exhausted.
- The trouble here is that "they" is ambiguous: it could be referring to either "deer" or "German shepherds." "German shepherds" makes more sense to me, because the dogs are the ones doing it for sport/hunt, and the deer are running for their lives; of course, it could also mean that the dogs made the deer so tired that the deer had to give up.

In any case, just change "they" to either "deer" or "German shepherds."

3. We hiked almost 14 miles to the campsite, pitched our tents, arranged our sleeping bags, and then made our supper. This was so exhausting that we immediately went to sleep.
-> Correct (...Although there might be an issue with "this" referring to a whole bunch of things, instead of saying, " *these* activities were so exhausting"... You should check. "This" sounds fine to me, but...not sure.)

4. Many of our presidents began their political careers as minor public officials, which is a good thing.
"Which is a good thing" sounds funny to me - this might be incorrect usage of "which," but I can't tell; it may just be colloquialism.

5. Maria told Joan that her bicycle had a flat tire.
Again, it's not clear as to whether "her" refers to Maria or Joan: ambiguity!

Fix this by replacing "her" with one of their names. It'll sound a bit weird, but the original structure is incorrect. (That's one of the things you learn for the SAT. Heh).

6. In "Mama's Bank Account," it describes how a Norwegian American family lives in San Francisco.
"It" is used incorrectly. "In...it..." is improper structure. The correct way:
"Mama's Bank Account" describes how a Norwegian American family lives in San Francisco.
OR (but more awkward)
In "Mama's Bank Account" is a description of how a Norwegian American family lives in San Francisco.

7. When we saw the flock of geese during the guided tour, they told us that they had flown all the way from North Canada.
The error here is "they." We understand that this is meant to refer to the person/people leading the tour, but a) that's not obvious from the sentence structure [and b) "they" shouldn't refer to only one person, and the tour guide is probably just one person]. The fix:
When we saw the flock of geese during the guided tour, *the guide* told us that they had flown all the way from North Canada.

8. Jan liked the Wynton Marsalis tape, but was disappointed that it didn't include her favorite one.
This is very ambiguous. Favorite "one"? Favorite what? Song? Marsalis is a jazz musician, so it's likely that it means "song."

Fix: Replace "one" with some other word (probably "song").

Just a few notes:
- "She was the perfect child, the one everyone envies, even then." the audience already knows that she's envied...you don't have to restate it.
- "We were polar opposites, but like magnets, we were inseparable from that point on." I like this idea, but simplify it. Say something like "she was Positive and I was Negative, and like polar opposites, our magnetic fields pulled towards each other at blinding speeds". I wouldn't use the magnet metaphor to say you're inseparable; something more like glue would work better. Because, after all, you can pull apart magnets fairly easily right?
- "People would always do a double take when they saw Kristi, with her perfectly manicured nails and her perfectly coordinated outfits with purses and shoes to match and her perfectly straight blonde hair, not one strand out of place, with me." The "with me" part doesn't make sense in this sentence.
- "She was in her orange bikini, a colour that would have looked horrible on nearly anyone else, but she managed to pull it off." Here, you can omit "she managed to pull it off". I think it's easy to assume the audience can conclude that she can pull it off when you say "that would have looked horrible on nearly anyone else". As well, your spelling of the word "color"? I don't know if you're British or not, but if you're not British, don't use that spelling. It's not necessary.

Overall, not too bad. I actually enjoyed reading it. Always keep writing!

I'm impressed. A very inspirational piece of writing, accurately describing the life of a typical teenager. Although Kristi seems like a slight Mary-Sue - her life can't be perfect. Hopefully you'll develop her character a little more. Also, Kristi needs a reason to stay such a loyal friend to Evie. In reality, I don't think anyone would stay loyal to a friend "just 'cause." However, this is only the beginning, so I presume you still have a lot to write about. Introduce an interesting plot please. :) I'd love to see something that Evie does or has that's better than Kristi and Kristi's reaction.

I did East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda) about a year ago and actually didn't organise anything before getting there. That way you cut out the middle man and not only get a better deal, the the money actually gets to the locals. This really isn't a problem to arrange. In Nairobi in particular, you will be approached by so many touts for tour companies that the problem isn't setting things up, its too much choice. My suggestion - shop around. You can get great deals on camping style safaris. Safaris can start literally next day so you also won't waste time by arranging things there. We went to Masai Mara and Nakuru and loved it. Tanzania is also easy to organise. We arranged in Arusha and went to Serengeti, Ngorongo and Lake Manyara. Similar situation to Kenya - shop around. And make sure you like your driver. They really can make or break your safari. Unlike Kenya and Tanzania, you may neeed more time to organise a safari in Uganda. they don't necessarily leave every day. Having said that its still worth doing Uganda for the friendly people, the primates (gorillas, chimps etc). If you're going anywhere in Africa (eg South Africa) I can't help you there. Haven't been there myself but it looks very professional and upmarket.

This is something i recommend, unusual and different. You sleep in safari tents and have to take a sleeping bag/pillow. You have dinner in the elephant house and interact with some nocturnal creatures, while your host gives you any info you need. You are woken in the morning by birds and gibbons and then you are introduced to more animals. Cost is about 200 dollars adults, 145 kids

As far as I know, there aren't any 5 day guided tours in Hawaii unless you take a cruise. Perhaps you can sign up for multiple one day tours. You can also hire a private tour guide or buy a book like the revealed series which include hiking information and do your own tour.

Have you decided on an island yet? My favorite things to do include a luau and snorkeling. My favorite island is Maui, but the other islands are nice also. I created a site about Hawaii that should contain some useful information for you: http://hawaiiaddict.blogspot.com/

I'll keep my answer short, something you should practise with questions.

If I can have my druthers, I'd druther make my druthers a single druther, that being, that I like 'em all.
